I occasionally receive personal messages through social media, to give tips, advice and motivational messages.
The other day, I received one from a Mother who had a nervous daughter before her premiership (championship) game. I naturally obliged and wrote this to her, to have her share with her daughter directly…
“NAME, I will not wish you good luck, because luck didn’t get you here. Your standards did.
Think about what got you to this point. Think about what got your team to this point. When you were doing this development, as you were on your path to your brilliance… Your focus was on getting better each day, practice and game. Your energy was coming from love and respect to yourself and your team. The effort you put into this mission, kept you discipline and resilient through all the ups and the downs, so that you could remain focused on both your team’s and your desire of winning the premiership.
Trust yourself, trust your team and go make yourself proud!”
I then told the Mother that this should put everything into perspective for her and still rev herself up to giving 100% energy, focus and effort to achieving her team’s and her mission.
She replied in saying that it made her want to run out and play! Joking aside, she said it helped her daughter a lot, and that she will reread the message before bed and when she wakes up in the morning.
A few days later, the Mother told me that they ended up losing the game by a few points, but that she had a “blinder.” For people that aren’t familiar with this term, it means she had a great game!
The Mother assured me that wasn’t just “Mom talking!”
She did say that her daughter was naturally bummed out after the game, but quickly snapped out of it, because she saw the bigger picture. She was proud of her team’s growth and was excited for the next season.
This young woman figured it out!
She realized, that if both she and her team fulfill their standards (the controllables) every day, they will then know it in their heart, that they did everything that they could.
By her knowing this, she will always be proud herself and at peace with the results, no matter if they’re ideal or not.
This is the key to being and feeling unbreakable; living up to your standards and making yourself proud every day.
